Tanner Gordon & The Unfortunates is an alternative-rock quartet from Edmonton, Alberta comprised of Tanner Gordon, Bryce Thornton, Tim Plamondon and Brendan Urban.
The band’s formation began in 2010 when Tanner decided to go a new direction with his music. Through work, Tanner met Tim who was know for being a great musician with a multitude of skills and talents with a theory background. Tanner was then introduced to Brendan, who had been playing with Tim in bands for nearly a decade. The trio instantly gelled and began playing shows and recorded the album “Calm Down This is Only The End”. Tanner was still searching to add another element to the band; he then met up with Bryce; an old friend and musician, giving him and advanced copy of the album to learn the guitar parts for a show they were playing in two weeks. From there, the group was formed.
The Unfortunates name had come to be by fate. Stick Figure (Tim and Brendan’s band) was looking for a more serious name that would also be a play on their stage presence, which they were known for (a happy-go-lucky/self-decapitating band) They had come up with the name “The Unfortunates” but never got around to use it as they had disbanded. Years later, Tanner was completely enthralled by the novel “The Unfortunates”; a cult classic that mirrored his writing process and haunted the same kind of story he had been writing for the album “We Talked Of Shadows” One day Tim approached Tanner with the idea of using this as the band name, there was no argument.
The Unfortunates were Sonic 102.9’s November 2011 Band of the Month, playing to a sold out show at their BOTM Showcase at the Pawn Shop. They also appeared on Breakfast Television to promote their nationwide release of their first album “We Talked of Shadows” (2011) and played to a full house at the prestigious Starlite Room where former greats like Nirvana, Green Day and Our Lady Peace have previously preformed.
Their music style has been compared to the likes of Our Lady Peace, Weezer, Arcade Fire, Tom Petty, and Nirvana.
Currently, the band is promoting and touring while beginning the process of writing their next chapter.
