One of the brightest guitarists of his generation, Toronto native and current New York resident Matthew Stevens will soon be releasing his debut album. Over the past decade he has recorded and performed with some of contemporary music's finest musicians including Christian Scott, Victor Bailey, Jason Moran, Rodney Holmes, Ben Williams, Jeff Lorber, Aaron Parks, Jacky Terrasson, Esperanza Spalding, Walter Smith, Gerald Clayton and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Stevens' playing has been applauded in publications worldwide, including The New York Times, Downbeat, Jazz Times, Billboard Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, and All About Jazz.
He has toured extensively worldwide, performing at some of the best national and international jazz festivals including Montreux, North Sea, Newport, Montreal, Monterey, Fujitsu, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage, and at renowned venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, The Kennedy Center, The Blue Note clubs in New York, Tokyo and Milan, and The Moscow International Music House.
Stevens is a member of the adjunct faculty at The New School in New York and has taught at The Maryland Summer Jazz Workshop and Berklee College of Music (his alma mater).
Not yet 30 years old, New Orleans native Christian Scott is already one of the most highly-regarding trumpet players in jazz. Having released several critically-acclaimed recordings for Concord over the past few years, the Grammy-nominated musician has just released a new disc entitled "Christian aTunde Adjuah", the latter two names being a new addition to his surname reflecting his West African heritage. Many of the tunes on the new CD have a social or political theme but the music is an attempt to join the jazz style with which most of us are familiar and new and creative innovations. Scott writes, "…that the listener will hear on the album a stretching of jazz, not a replacement" and "…that innovation should never be regarded as a problem in artistic practice, that one should always be aware of what has come before, and finally, that criticisms shouldn't evoke paralysis but should inspire action."
