René Marie, the award winning singer whose style incorporates elements of jazz, soul, blues and gospel, has quickly become a heroine to many, a woman of great strength exuding stamina and compassion. Waiting until she was forty years old to begin her professional singing career, she has evolved into one of the greatest and most sensuous vocalists of our time in less than twenty years. Unmistakably honest and unpretentious while transforming audiences worldwide with her powerful interpretations, electrifying deliveries and impassioned vocals, René Marie has drawn a legion of fans and music critics who find themselves not only entertained, but encouraged and even changed by her performances.
Her latest recording on Motema is “Black Lace Freudian Slip”. It is a jazz-oriented vocal album that is dominated by the singer's own compositions. Co-produced by pianist Bruce Barth, her writing is as strong as her singing. Jazz vocalists, of course, have a long history of using other artists' songs to express themselves emotionally; but on this album her own songs are the main focus. The jazz world is full of artists who have little or no interest in anything having to do with rock, folk, or R&B; Marie, however, clearly is not one of them. The jazz-oriented (though not jazz-exclusive) singer has kept an open mind, and that open-mindedness continues to serve her well on “Black Lace Freudian Slip”.
