THE ORCHARD WITH JESSICA DENISE LIVE AT RUBY TUESDAY!!
THE ORCHARD
To hear The Orchard talk about their musical influences, including Reba, Pearl Jam, The Zac Brown Band, Miranda Lambert and a host of classic and southern rock bands, one realizes how they blended those influences together to create their own unique, refreshing and honest sound.
Kasha Anne and Mitch Smith comprise this new duo that has already started winning accolades. These ambassadors of Global Country were named Entertainer of the Year, Duo and Vocalist of the Year as well as having the Song of the Year at the 2011 North American Country Music Associations International (NACMAI) awards show in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. Kasha has also taken home the 2010 Global Country Star Search top prize while Mitch has been earning recognition as a songwriter and guitar player.
While the duo are both immersed in music on a daily basis as songwriters, Mitch is becoming a sought after guitar teacher while Kasha teaches a family friendly program called "Music Together".
The Orchard, trained at Berklee College of Music, are not your typical duo as Kasha is the main vocalist while Mitch's voice comes mainly in the form of lyrics and lyrical ideas. A duo who believe the music is just as important as the lyric in helping paint a picture.
Playing for the Association of Country Music in Alberta (ACMA) at the Calgary Stampede Hall of Fame and Red Deer's Westerner Days brought the duo to the attention of Royalty Records where they showcased and performed during the label's 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA) events before signing with them in the fall.
Nominated for the ACMA Duo/Group of the Year award and releasing their first single "Stick to Your Guns", The Orchard is looking forward to bringing in 2012 with a bang!

JESSICA DENISE
Jessica's voice transports you to a time in the past. Reminiscent of classic folk singers such as Joan Baez, and Judy Collins, Jessica joins together classical training and a love for contemporary styles. She is able create a sound that is both classic and modern, soulful, and pure.
"I grew up listening to classical music, opera, and musical theatre. My grandma loved her classics. When I would visit her on weekends, she would play her favorites on the piano."
Jessica's lyrical inspiration comes from life experience and her own personal trials and tribulations. Songs like "The Road" express her own personal pain and struggle, yet there is a strength in her voice and her music that is reflective of the strength she herself possesses.
From the day Jessica walked into her first group piano lesson at the age of 4, it was apparent that she possessed a true love and gift for music. She excelled in her piano studies, and later joined a childrens choir where she realized her passion for singing. "In choir, they would put me in the alto section because my voice was too loud. Ha ha. The choir director would always shout to me and tell me to sing quietly. I couldn't help it!" she giggles as she recalls.
Later, someone urged her to study classical voice, which she did. She continued to study classical voice throughout her junior high and high school years."I spent most of my 'free' time practicing, at a lesson, or at a rehearsal. There were always competitions, master classes, coachings, performances."
Receiving several scholarship offers from university vocal programs, Jessica attended but quickly realized that singing operatic arias and playing piano concertos were not completely fulfilling. "I loved classical music. I loved singing. I loved playing the piano, but there was something missing. I couldn't understand why I felt that way. I thought that maybe I was destined to do something else; that maybe music wasn't my calling." It was then that Jessica decided to do something drastic. Against the wishes of her family and mentors, she dropped out of her studies and decided to take some time off away from music. "I spent a lot of time doing everything else. I studied psychology, I studied dance, I took acting. I even thought about becoming an accountant! Ha ha." However, she quickly realized that life away from music was not fulfilling either. "Not having music in my life was heartbreaking. Not being able to perform, I felt a big part of myself was missing." Unsure of which direction to go, Jessica decided to try something she had never done before - write music. "I sat down and I poured my heart and soul into the piano keys...and the lyrics followed. I sat there, and I cried, and I said to myself, 'this is what my heart was trying to tell me all along. I just didn't listen.'"
Her songs come straight from her heart. When she performs, she allows the audience inside her own personal world and takes them on a journey through the centre of her universe; to the bottom of its deepest oceans and to the top of its highest mountains, and then safely back to where she started, home.
Jessica is currently working on writing more songs, recording, and getting out to perform as much as she possibly can. She still remains an avid fan and listener of classical music and musical theatre. "I will always appreciate my roots and where my musical journey began and I try to keep a bit of those roots in mind when I write [music]. I want to be able to touch others with my music the way that others' music has touched me."
